There are geopolitical/defense/cultural reasons for protecting Israel.
In order: 'Who else we got in the neighborhood'? Valuable R&D cooperation, particularly on missile defense technology. And 'never again', which is self explanatory.
You could more credibly argue that American evangelicals, and their representatives in Congress are the more powerful, more influential, 'deep state' support for Israel.
