I think I just figured out why Spectrascience acquired Oncoscope..

We all know (or at least should know by now) that the WavSTAT4 can do much more than simply detect colorectal cancer. Studies have been done for the bladder, intestines, and even the throat. It's assumed, at least to me, SCIE acquired Oncoscope for their technology. We know this much from the PR:

Quote:
Oncoscope developed a proprietary optical imaging system to provide immediate, minimally-invasive detection of pre-cancerous epithelial tissues using scattered white light. Their first target indication was for Barrett's Esophagus, a precursor for cancer of the esophagus.

But what we didn't know, or at least I didn't know (I'm the only one talking in here, so conversations aren't exactly happening), is that a study was performed in 2013 where..

Quote:
The WavSTAT® Optical Biopsy System (SpectraScience Inc, San Diego, USA) was gifted to the endoscopy unit of Glasgow Royal Infirmary, to allow a pilot study to be performed among patients with Barrett’s oesophagus,

So this was back in 2013. Which means whatever the results were, SCIE has had 3 years to improve on them.

Side note
Notice the picture of the wavstat4 on page 104. The title says..

Quote:
Image of new generation WavSTAT monitor and optical biopsy forceps. The forceps are single use and able to take an optical and physical biopsy sample

Which makes me wonder..will there be an even better WavSTAT5 in the future?

Back on topic..

Benefits of the WavSTAT4..

Quote:
The WavSTAT® Optical Biopsy system has several potential advantages. It is relatively cheap, easy to use and provides the endoscopist with instant results, rather than a delay of days for histology results from physical biopsy. The optical biopsy forceps do not need to be removed from the endoscope unless a physical biopsy is required, allowing the endoscopist to survey long segments of Barrett’s mucosa in a shorter time compared with the standard Settle protocol

So.. heres the kicker..

The results of the test in 2013, from the gifted WavSTAT4 to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary states..

Quote:
Future improvements
Optical biopsy sampling has the potential to provide real-time diagnosis of premalignant and early neoplastic tissue in Barrett’s oesophagus. Unfortunately the WavSTAT® Optical Biopsy system in its current state does not meet the necessary criteria . However further work is in progress and once the optimum excitation wavelength has been identified, the results may be more favourable.

This is great! Why is this great? I mean.. it does say 'Unfortunately'. You're reading it wrong. These results don't say the WavSTAT4 doesn't work for detecting colorectal polyps. This wasn't the purpose of the study. This study was for Barrett’s oesophagus! SCIE wants to make their product available to MORE than just the colorectal community.

So.. the reason the results of this specific test is so great, is because this test was from 2013!

Read again..

Quote:
However further work is in progress and once the optimum excitation wavelength has been identified, the results may be more favourable

Further work is in progress. That means SCIE didn't give up on trying to tweek the WavSTAT to work properly for Barrett’s oesophagus.

Keep reading. This is the best part..

Quote:
once the optimum excitation wavelength has been identified, the results may be more favourable

What just happened a couple of weeks ago? ONCOSCOPE ACQUISITION! and why? Because Oncoscope's technology..

Quote:
provides immediate, minimally-invasive detection of pre-cancerous epithelial tissues using scattered white light .

Which means, for the past 3 years, SCIE has been searching for the optimum excitation wavelength. By acquiring Oncoscope's scattered white light technology, this may mean that SCIE finally found the correct wavelength in order to get the WavSTAT4 to detect Barrett's Esophagus.

One more bit of information which continues to show that SCIE has been working diligently towards sales.
