Here is a thought. Maybe a mutual agreement between Tom and Jerry to part ways and the reasons are between them. Shake hands and walk away. Don't look back.
Lots of previous speculation that could be possible
"Tom played his role" he moves on
"Tom went back to Snapple and something is in the works with RMHB"
"Tom doesn't want the role of CEO because he's done similar things for decades and is just tired"
"Maybe he just wasn't getting the job done quick enough that he was suposed to do"
