We have historically seen older films get new life when a new format introduces itself. Specifically, I am referring to HD, there were films that were re-mastered that had successful runs during the HD era.
As the 1080p/720p era comes to a close, 4K/UHD will be here for at least 7-9 years from now. The reason why studios did not allow Netflix to license classic content is because the studios understood that there would be an opportunity to monetize classic films as newer formats introduce themselves.
So the question is, will these classic films replicate their box office sales in 4K/UHD VOD rentals?
The answer is a big fat NO.
However, here is a better question:
Will millennials want to see their favorite films in 4k?
In my opinion, yes. Even if only 1% of the box office goers watch their favorite film in 4K, we are talking about 417 Million in VOD rentals, nothing to snub at. NTEK's percentage is roughly 20-25% which would equal approximately 104 Million in net revenues.
So that is why the 41.730 Billion figure means something.
ALSO, there are films historically that have had the opposite reaction in the VOD market meaning a film had an average revenue run at the Box Office and when the film hit the VOD market, some films report trampling the box office sales by 300 times the box office sales. So there is much about the VOD market that the general public does not understand, furthermore, the 4K/UHD market which will prove itself in the next 3 years.
Do not take my word for it, here's a good source:
