Some weeks ago, I wrote a post on the "dog whistle" racism of the Trump campaign. "Dog whistle politics" are tactics that can be heard by some of the electorate, but not by others. As expected, some white friends objected that I was being judgmental and needed to give Trump the benefit of the doubt.
It is the nature of dog whistle racism to be inaudible to white people who are comfortable with the way things are, however unfair. So the head spokesperson of the Donald Trump campaign can call Obama the "head negro in charge" and many white people don't hear the racism. She can refer to the president as a "half breed" and many white Americans cannot hear the racism.
"Little Bird" is a company that studies analytics for social media. They have perhaps made Trump's tactics more audible for hearing impaired whites when it comes to racism. It turns out that, of the 21 people the Trump campaign re-tweeted this last week, 28% have links to our nation's top white supremacist organizations, and 62% have multiple links to a movement claiming that diversity is a ploy to bring about the genocide of white people. Remember these are not random people who tweeted Trump, these are people Trump re-tweeted.
As they say in the commercial, "Can you hear me now?"
