Roku 4 Adds UltraFlix 4K
by Scott Wilkinson on December 7, 2015
Shoppers are sure to snag lots of UHDTVs this holiday season—it would be hard not to, given how fast and far prices have fallen. Virtually all these TVs have online-streaming apps built in, but the selection is generally somewhat limited, so many buyers toss an outboard streaming box into the shopping cart.
One of the most popular streamer choices for UHDTVs is the new Roku 4 with 4K/UHD streaming, and now there’s yet another reason to pick one up. Last week, Roku announced that the Roku 4 will add UltraFlix to its roster of online-streaming providers. UltraFlix currently offers the world’s largest library of 4K/UHD streaming content, including over 500 titles. Unlike Netflix, UltraFlix uses a per-title rental system; titles vary in price up to $10, and you have 48 hours to watch a title you’ve ordered.
Earlier this year, UltraFlix announced several enhancements to its service, including high dynamic range (HDR) using the SMPTE/HDR10 format, which will be available with about 30 titles in late January. However, the Roku 4 does not support HDR, so that particular enhancement is moot in this case.
Another UltraFlix enhancement is the use of MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) encoding, which dynamically adjusts the bitrate to the highest possible value depending on network conditions. All Roku streamers support MPEG-DASH, so the Roku 4 will be ready for it when UltraFlix starts using it with all its titles in late January.
