U.S. stocks extended their losses Monday, led lesser by a deepening selloff in energy shares as oil prices plumbed new lows.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 177 points, or 1%, to 17670 in midday trading. The S&P 500 dropped 1%. The Nasdaq Composite plunged 0.9%.
Energy companies posted the sharpest losses among major sectors, with energy stocks in the S&P 500 shedding 4.3%.
Crude-oil futures in New York fell 5.1% to $37.94 a barrel following last week’s meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The cartel finished its meeting with no agreement to cut production.
In the Dow, Chevron posted the sharpest losses, losing 3.9%. Exxon Mobil plunged 3.2%.
