This morning I spent some time comparing our app delivery over three different platforms: 2015 Samsung UN65JS9500, Nvidia Shield and Roku 4. I watched parts of Terminator Genisys with each. My internet connection is wired at 17mbps. I watch Netflix and HDR Amazon 4k content with this connection without any problems. First, the Samsung seems to have some bugs that need to be addressed. I attempted to play the movie to only have it constantly freeze. I expected this might happen, as I've read many reviews of owners complaining of this. I then reduced the stream to 15mbps, still didn't work, then 12mbps, still freezing. Finally is reduced the stream to 8mbps and it played smoothly. The picture was generally what I've come to expect from 4k content. I was concerned that at 8mbps I might notice the compression. To my delight, the picture quality was not significantly different than either of the other platforms I played. It also looks like NTEK has updated the Samsung app to support surround sound, where at launch it hadn't yet. Second, the Nvidia Shield. Our app isn't natively available on the Shield, so I have side-loaded it. This is the platform I've used our app on the most. It works flawlessly on auto without any difficulty. It quickly loads with a smooth picture throughout. Lastly, with Roku, NTEK has gone with a classic Roku app design. While I've never been much of a fan of the classic Roku look, I did find it to be refreshing from our normal app. The thing I liked about our Roku app is; it just worked. I logged on, clicked play and I was off running. Again, smooth playback from the Roku. Roku also doesn't have the option to adjust playback speed. I'm not sure if this is a temporary thing or if we're going with a fully automatic engine. Picture quality was very good with the Roku. No significant difference from the Nvidia Shield. In the end, It's clear NTEK has some work to do to fix the Samsung app and I'm sure they're well aware of this. It's crucial that the initial user experience is pain free and Samsung is our largest customer pool to draw from. In the end, I'd like to see NTEK marry these two app layouts a bit. I like the look of our classic app, but I've never been much of a fan of our user friendliness of the options/payment/ect with the original app. I'm very happy with the ease of use from the Roku. They did a great job with our app for Roku. If anyone has any follow-up questions about these platforms I'm open to answering them.
