The U.S. currently imports 1.3 billion pounds of shrimp each year to supplement domestic production of just 400 million pounds. Domestic consumption is growing with most shrimp purchased frozen in bulk at prices ranging from $3.50/lb. to over $9.00/lb. and rising depending on quality and season. U.S. sources of shrimp are on the decline – especially given the complications in the Gulf of Mexico, natural disasters, Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) bacterial problems and overfishing. Imported shrimp are often chemical-laden products of developing countries’ shrimp farms.
