NEW YORK, Nov. 20, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Wines of Chile USA celebrates the second annual #CarmenereDay virtual wine tasting Monday, November 23rd 7-8:30 pm EST. Hosted at multiple locations in the USA and Chile, this virtual tasting will bring wine lovers and Wines of Chile offices around the globe together to toast Carmenere, a Bordelais grape variety. Thought to be extinct, Carmenere was rediscovered 21 years ago to be thriving in Chile.
The second annual #CarmenereDay tasting has expanded both in global reach with participants joining in from Asia, the UK, Canada, Brazil and Chile, and by doubling its social media platforms, as participants can use both Periscope and Twitter. Wine lovers everywhere can join the conversation by picking up a few bottles of Chilean Carmenere and tasting along with @drinkchile on Twitter and Periscope. Wines featured in the tasting will include Carmenere-based selections from Carmen, Casa Silva, Koyle, Lapostolle, Los Vascos, Maquis, Montes, Santa Rita and Tamaya.
Master Sommeliers Fred Dexheimer and Laura Maniec will moderate the discussion and be available to answer questions during the guided tastings. They will be joined by over 40 wine bloggers across the USA, all tasting and tweeting in real time.
"Twenty-one years have passed since November 24, 1994, when French ampelographer Jean Michel Boursiquot identified what was commonly called Chilean Merlot as Carmenere," said Wines of Chile Executive Director, Marybeth Bentwood. "Carmenere has evolved tremendously since its rediscovery. We honor the craftsmanship of Chilean vintners by celebrating this discovery with a global virtual tasting of some of the finest Carmenere."
Chilean Carmenere grapes are vinified into luscious wines with ripe fruit, spicy nuances and rounded tannins. These elegant, complex wines pair well with poultry, game and rich vegetable dishes. Indeed, the complex flavors and spice characteristics make Carmenere an ideal Thanksgiving wine.
