Nike Split Means Less Discretionary, More Industry in Dow Industrials -- Barron's Blog

After the close Nike ( NKE) announced that it would split its stock in two, buyback more share, and raise its dividend. Not only is has Nike's announcement made its shares more attractive to investors--its shares have jumped 3.2% to $129.82 at 5:08 p.m. in after-hours trading today--it will also reduce the consumer-discretionary sector's weight in the Dow Jones Industrial Average thanks to the benchmark's price weighting.
According to S&P Dow Jones Indices' Howard Silverblatt, Nike's stock split will reduce the weight of the consumer discretionary sector in the Dow Jones Industrial Average to 16.7% from 18.3%, while the Industrial Sector will rise from 19.1% to 20%. Consumer discretionary has a 12.5% weighting in the market-cap weighted S&P 500, while the industrial sector has a 10.3% weight.
Despite the fact that the raised dividends and increased buybacks are often signs that a company doesn't have as many growth opportunities, Nike CEO Mark Parker said that's not the case. "We are built for growth, while also staying committed to creating shareholder value over the long term," he said in a press release. "We've proven it time and again, having returned over $23 billion to shareholders over the last 14 years through share repurchases and dividends. Moving forward, we see even greater potential for NIKE as we continue to unlock new markets, new experiences and new products."
Investors sure don't seem to mind.
