September 9, 2015 | This week, the Los Angeles Philharmonic dramatically augments the concert experience by launching apps for the Oculus Rift and the Samsung Gear VR.
Following in the footsteps of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic starts a Virtual Reality (VR) experiment of its own. Its newly launched apps allows listeners/viewers to experience the orchestra from the conductor’s perspective; moreover, by ´looking upwards´, app users can watch educational animations that explain the music (currently Beethoven´s Symphony No. 5).
The purpose of the LA Philharmonic’s app experiment is to draw new crowds to its concert performances. With the aid of VR, the orchestra hopes to draw an audience that is interested in the digital experience as well as classical music.
Unlike the VR project of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic’s app does not limit itself to the concert venue: the orchestra has commissioned the construction of ‘Van Beethoven’. This truck has been fitted with concert hall-style plush chairs, as well as a series of VR glasses. The LA Philharmonic goes to these extraordinary lengths to visit schools and other public organisations in order to allow an extra 50,000 people to experience Beethoven and the LA Philharmonic.
