TOKYO -- Japan's Mitsubishi Rayon and Nitto Denko will work together to cultivate overseas markets for their water treatment businesses.
The Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings unit and the industrial tape maker have formed a strategic partnership to share technology and know-how in order to develop and sell products together.
Mitsubishi Rayon's membrane bioreactor technologies do a good job eliminating microbes and bacteria. Nitto Denko's reverse osmosis system, on the other hand, is strong in removing viruses, which are even smaller.
The duo would be able to offer a product that efficiently eliminates particles of 0.001 micron or less by combining their technologies. They will also share expertise in making equipment compact and energy efficient as well as mutually utilize their technical support bases, to raise the cost competitiveness of equipment installation and operations.
Mitsubishi Rayon and Nitto Denko will consider setting up a joint venture to sharpen their competitive edge.
The partners will target factories and water treatment facilities as customers, aiming to win 50 orders over the next five years for equipment with minimum capacities of 5,000 cu. meters a day.
They will focus on China, India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, where population growth and economic development are expected to make water contamination and shortages serious. More and more factories and water-processing plants in these regions are adopting water-recycling equipment.
The market for water recycling is expected to reach an estimated 1 trillion yen ($8.41 billion) in 2020. The market for water treatment membranes is expected to top 300 billion yen. General Electric of the U.S. enjoys a 40% or so share in the membrane bioreactor systems market, and Mitsubishi Rayon is No. 2, with a roughly 20% share.
In reverse osmosis, America's Dow Chemical has the top share of 30% or so. Nitto Denko and compatriot Toray are vying for the No. 2 spot. European and Asian players are also joining the competition.
In 2010, Mitsubishi Rayon and Nitto Denko jointly won an order for a large-scale water treatment facility in Singapore.
