Remember that if you are silly enough to put in a stop order -- "Sell at 1.40" for example -- it SHOWS UP on their order books. They can see it, though we mere mortals cannot. They can walk it down on 100 share trades to themselves, buy your stock at 1.40, and then let the stock go right back up. I have known people who got take out that way even on huge stocks like AAPL.
Speaking of spikes -- remember that just a few days ago AAPL spiked down below 95 momentarily, and then was back up over 105 within an hour or so? If that can happen to a stock with that volume, just imagine what a market maker can do to a small volume stock.
If we just hang on and ignore their games, it's not going to hurt us in the long run. It's sickening to behold, but in the fullness of time WE are going to be the ones who are happy, and those who are not in the stock, or short it, are not going to be feeling so good.
