Google bought out Youtube for 1.65 Billion in 2006. At that time, many thought google over paid.
Google saw a trend and also knew the value of Youtube better than the average person. Youtube is the #2 Search engine in the world. Video has replaced blogs and monetizing video has proven to be more profitable than monetizing webpages with text content.
So 9 years later, it's easy to figure out that Google paid a very small amount to gain ownership of Youtube. 1.65 Billion is peanuts compared to the valuation analysts have put on the company in 2014. Estimates of Youtube came in at roughly 40 billion in 2014 and I'm sure that figure is much more now.
