The reason why Amazon acquired Elemental is simply because it makes good business sense.

Anyone with any business sense can think of a number of companies that would benefit from acquiring Nanotech. These potential companies may be in a related field or may not. There may be a company out there that could immensely benefit from acquiring this wonderful start up. There may be a company in an unrelated field who wants to enter this space and acquiring NTEK would allow them to do so.
We already know that Nanotech is interested in being a big player and they have already positioned themselves to be right there with Netflix and Amazon. Walk into any best buy, target, costco, etc. and see for yourself.
It will be interesting to see how long they can go without succumbing to the corporate powers that will inevitably make the company an offer that they can't refuse imo.
