Beni the bonobo is coming to theater near you

August 28, 2015

All right, Mr. DeMille, young Beni is ready for his close-up.

The wise-eyed Congolese bonobo stars in a new documentary that will light up a screen at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carmike Wynnsong theater in Johnston. Tickets are $20, and all proceeds from the single-night screening of “Bonobos: Back to the Wild” will benefit the Ape Cognition and Conservation Initiative (formerly the Great Ape Trust) in southeast Des Moines, home of Beni’s distant cousins Kanzi, Nyota, Elikya, Maisha and Teco.

The family-friendly story of Beni, who was rescued from poachers and raised in a sanctuary before being released into the jungle, “portrays in a way not seen before the plight of bonobos in the wild – where they are too often captured for bushmeat and the pet trade,” ACCI co-director Jared Tagliatela said in a prepared statement.

One of Beni’s co-stars is the conservationist Claudine Andre, who collaborate 10 years ago with the research center in Des Moines, the only North American facility that houses bonobos.

ACCI veterinarian and board member Julie Gilmore will give a short talk before the film about the organization’s current research. The movie's distributor, Hannover House CEO Eric Parkinson, also plans to share a few words at the event.
