Do you fancy yourself a good hand with cards? Well if you have the skills and the confidence to call out people on their bluffs and make money, you may want to give Soulja Boy (DeAndre Way) a call. The rapper’s World Poker Fund Holdings is one of his new attempts to bring back the reign of poker in popular culture. If recent buzz is any indication, he’s off to a great start.
The company was formed earlier this year and has already taken huge strides toward taking over the tables. GamingIntelligence.com reports that the business has acquired the tournament rights for the International Poker League and the IPL Vegas Open. This lends a new air of legitimacy to the S.O.D. CEO’s latest investment opportunity. The deal would involve WPFH owning 20 episodes of top-tier tournaments like the UK Open, Venetian Vegas Open and Caesars Vegas Open, which would all be streamed online through the company’s World Poker Channel.
The “Crank Dat” rapper is dead serious about his foray into online gaming and has even gone so far as to hire Martin Owens as an online gaming advisor to the company. Owens is a lawyer specializing in online gaming law. He has also written books on the subject.
“This is a very exciting project,” Owens said to Gaming Intelligence. “The players, the technology, the platforms are all coming together right here in California. It’s time to bring online poker up to its full potential, in the USA and all over the world.”
The company is also working with Native American tribes throughout California to petition for several laws, including one in support of online poker. If the new laws on online gaming go through in California, World Poker Fund Holdings Inc. plans to take full advantage of the lucrative new opportunities it could present. Presently, only Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware allow for online gambling industries, so a new law in California would be a huge deal.
Soulja Boy is hardly the first celebrity, or musician, to jump on the online gambling gravy train. Many established stars have already provided their endorsements of various slot machines, with InterCasino.com hosting games featuring Dolly Parton and heavy metal icons Megadeth. Even Ellen Degeneres, the queen of daytime talk, has her own line of slot machines making their way through Las Vegas casinos. The machines are a way for celebs to stay relevant and make some extra money on the side while doing very little work, save some promotion here and there.
One major advantage to having a celebrity like Soulja Boy as an investor is his ability to bring in other high-profile celebrities for tournaments and additional promotional opportunities. TMZ.com reports that Soulja even offered to finance Jose Canseco’s poker career. By bringing in more recognizable faces and increasing the profile of WPFH, the rapper-turned-entrepreneur could definitely bring his social media savvy to online gaming and see the company catch on quickly.
People can say what they want on the quality of the man’s art, but there’s no denying his swag and sense of business savvy. Soulja is jumping in on the ground floor of what could turn out to be big business in California. As for his haters, they can expect to see him laughing all the way to the bank.
