Ever since it became monetized through the "Google Partners" system, Youtube started becoming VERY selective about what videos get shared or recommended. Furthermore, many people think that the hits counter is heavily flawed.

I once had a video project that ended up being featured on dozens of media and news websites and gained popularity in a rather viral fashion, and had a lot of people talking. The number of views never even reached 10k.
