In continuation of its focus towards business to business, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) took another step in that direction. Its subsidiaries, Certicom and QNX, are said to be jointly working to bring cryptography, as well as, entity authentication to the automobile industry. The two companies would offer a complete range of security framework for the automotive tier one supplier and automakers.

Pre-Integrations

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) disclosed that the pre-integrations of security framework would simplify the manufacturing, as well as, deployment of secured and connected vehicles, n4bb.com reported. Its unit, QNX Software Systems, is known for leadership quality in the telematics and automotive infotainment segment. The company has already deployed over 50 million vehicles with its OS and middleware technology.

Similarly, Certicom is known for its applied cryptography, as well as, a specialist in key management allowing end-to-end security for connected and smart gadgets. The growth in technology devices usage such as Wi-Fi hotspots, telematics systems, brought-in device and apps were said to be the reasons behind the cyber-attack on in-vehicle electronics. The company said that cryptography safeguards the vehicle software, as well as, electronic components. This was done by ensuring that messages are transmitted from authentic gadgets and that the messages were not tampered with.

Security Solutions

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s CEO, John Chen, has reiterated every time that one of its focus areas was security. The latest is in line with his objective only. The company subsidiary’s security solutions included managed certificate service, Certicom Asset Management System, and portable cryptography toolkits. These were expected to offer secured key distribution in the process of manufacturing.

Certicom technology has provision for a component with a secure key during the process of manufacturing that customers will be able to use them to manage electronic subsystem keys. That can be used through the lifespan of the vehicle to ensure brake control modules; air bags and other security-centric components that are not counterfeited. However, these were made by trusted suppliers of OEM.

Combined Expertise

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s Certicom VP, Jim Alfred, said that the objective was to bring an integrated expertise to a broad range of customers by its collaboration with QNX Software Systems. This would enable its customers to establish on-board electronic gadgets. That included the other operating systems. The manufacturers of automobiles could use its capabilities in concert with a security framework to influence the complete vehicle.

Alfred said that the security has been designed in such way that would meet the faster development cycles of connected cars right from the word go and not added them as an afterthought. He added that the company’s products platform established this.

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s QNX Software would exhibit its automotive solutions during the TU-Automotive Detroit 2015 this week. The solution was for digital instrument clusters, advanced driving assistance systems, over-the-air software update technology and infotainment systems.
