ELMONT, N.Y. — The best equines in thoroughbred racing will take their marks again this weekend at the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes.
After California Chrome lost his chance at the coveted Triple Crown during last year’s Belmont Stakes, a new foal will attempt to make history. American Pharaoh has already won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He’ll vie for racing immortality on Saturday, June 6, during the race at Belmont, the oldest and longest leg of the Triple Crown.
Some $1.5 million are at stake in the Grade 1 race, according to the New York Racing Association.
General admission tickets for the festival – which runs from Thursday to Saturday – are still available for purchase via Ticketmaster.
Hopeful attendees are urged to buy their tickets soon as seats are expected to go fast – and those seats are limited. This year will be the first time that paid attendance for Belmont Stakes Day will be capped at 90,000.
NYRA officials anticipate that all available tickets will be sold out prior to June 6. As of Monday, nearly 75 percent of all available tickets for Belmont Stakes Day have already been sold.
“We fully anticipate that Belmont Stakes Day tickets will be sold out prior to June 6, but in the unlikely event that we are not, fans are reminded that no tickets will be sold at Belmont Park on Belmont Stakes Day. Any available ticket inventory will be available solely through Ticketmaster,” said Christopher Kay, Chief Executive Officer and President of the New York Racing Association.
