There's nothing wrong with the traditional format of presenting a TV show or web series, but there's no harm in trying something new, is there? The internet presents us with fresh opportunities and possibilities. As Kosmos Citizens, you have the chance to be part of building this show from this modest beginning into something a bit more epic.
We have started with the minimum of resources, producing 5 parts of a scifi mystery thriller. Occasionally, we found ourselves sailing a bit too close to the wind, but we stuck to our task and got through it. Though there is a lot of work to do, the sumit now appears within striking distance.
When we look at big scifi franchises, like Star Trek and Dr Who, we might forget those shows which are now mighty oaks were once tiny, rather vulnerable shoots in the ground, no bigger than a blade of grass. It took many decades for them to grow into what they are now; many years of careful nurturing.
Kosmos is at that vulnerable stage. It's just been born into this world. Not even the first episode has been aired. I mean, you don't even know if it's your thing, right? If this show is to grow beyond a tiny shoot, we need to nurtre it. That's me and you, together. It's very much a challenge. You might even say the odds are against us. But it will be fun trying, won't it?
I've mentioned this before; that the Statue of Liberty would maybe not now be standing if it hadn't been for one of the first successful crowdfunding campaigns. Thousands of New Yorkers chipped in tiny amounts of money to pay for the base on which the statue now stands. The majority of contributions were less than $1. But I think the pride at knowing you had contributed your bit would be same.
There is a theme of liberty in this project. We are creating this, filmmaker and audience together. There is no middle-man/woman to tell us what we can and can't do; what we are allowed to say, or not. Perhaps we have lost something since the captains of industry stood between us and dictated what we should consume.
You see, I like to think this is not just a step into the future, but also a reworking of past success. Think of Shakespeare and how he was not just a playwright. He was an actor who had to perform his plays, eyeball to eyeball with his audience. Actually, in any theatre production there is a connection between the performers and the audience you just don't get in TV or film. So, with this platform we are building here to give you a voice and a part to play, perhaps our Kosmos will have an essence of that.
I wrote Kosmos not while dreaming of red carpets and golden awards. I wrote it while I was thinking of you and how we could make something together; where you're not just "cattle" (as one Hollywood director recently suggested) passively awaiting to be spoonfed the next morsel; where you are actively involved in making this thing a success and, if we succeed, your names will be forever immortalised within it.
