Post# of 2009
The fact that content is very slowly added (just 12 titles last month) is generating questions. Add to that the promised content that was again not delivered (like the Milennium titles that were supposed to appear before the end of March, as per CEO SHL) eats away big chunks of the little confidence that was restored after the CEO change.
But as I stated in a previous post, I have no hope that UF will become the next Netflix. Not saying that UF will fail, no. There is a market I believe, but just not as big as some pony board pumpers make believe.
There is already talk about 1 mln UF subscribers before the end of this year (someone already dreams of a SP of $0.35 for this year\'s end). I\'m very cautious about that. There may be 1 mln \'subscribers\', but it\'s the rentals that bring in revenue, and advertising revenue is coupled to that I believe.
My doubt is based on the fact that the new TV sets have very good internal upscaling (as it appears), so the question remains if viewers will pay the premiun to have real 4K.
Just a comparision:
Interstellar on UF: $9.99 (upscaled HD streamed to 4K TV)
Interstellar on M-Go: $5.99 (HD streamed, then upscaled by 4K TV).
The quality difference needs to be big in order for people to pay a 50% premium, I would say.
I see that Vizio highlights the quality of internal upscaling in their promo clip.
Anyway, a quarter of what UF has, is just upscaled.
Concerning this, I hope it\'s not a trend, but since The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the last 4 movies added are all upscaled, including Interstellar and GI Joe.
We have to suppose the scanners at 4K Sudios are doing other jobs.
The fact that UF is now getting in the picture in retail stores is a good thing, but no guarantee that revenue will explode. At least UF shows up, as opposed to the NP-1 debacle.
Just being cautious here not to get high hopes again, like me and many others here have had for more than a year or longer.
Better be surprised than be disappointed.
Let\'s see what this week brings.
Last week was not very exciting.
