Multinational companies doing business with Qatar and local firms with international operations are set to benefit from a “faster and highly secure” global connectivity, which will be provided through a Qtel – British Telecommunications network node that has been set up.
British Telecommunications has established a local Point of Presence (PoP) for its BT Connect global network services, in Qatar, which will be operated by Qtel. Qtel’s Data Centre is to host the BT server, which will meet the business connectivity requirements of local and global customers in airline, banking, financial markets, oil and gas, logistics and construction industries.

SSE Telecoms Select Zayo Group for London Dark Fibre Network
Network to connect 22 PoPs by Q2 2014
Zayo Group, the global bandwidth infrastructure provider, today announced that it has won a contract to install a Point of Presence (PoP) network for SSE Telecoms, the network infrastructure and data centre service provider arm of the SSE Group. Zayo has designed and will provision the London dark fibre backhaul network for SSE Telecoms, which will connect 21 BT phone and Ethernet exchange points in London and a further exchange serving the Slough area.
The contract supports SSE Telecoms’ plan to extend its network coverage to all major business conurbations across the UK. This programme, known as ‘Project Edge’, will see SSE Telecoms deploy its own high capacity PoPs in 54 additional central business districts, serving almost an additional 106,000 business postcode areas with high bandwidth fibre connectivity.
SSE Telecoms already operates its own fibre network in London, but this new contract will enable it to leverage Zayo’s additional fibre reach, as well as Zayo’s ability to design and build large scale fibre networks, in order to offer high capacity connectivity services to a greater number of London-based businesses. Services in the London area will go live in Q2 2014.
“We selected Zayo for their experience in rapidly deploying networks. This specialisation in dark fibre gave us confidence in their ability to meet both our technical and commercial requirements,” said Chris Jagusz, Managing Director of SSE Telecoms.
“The reach of our London network and ability to rapidly expand to new locations for our customers is the foundation of our Bandwidth Infrastructure business,” said Alastair Kane, Zayo’s European vice-president. “The expanded network meets SSE Telecoms’ requirements as well as provides an opportunity to offer additional services to our base of customers.”
The extension of Zayo’s network into these 22 BT exchanges provides significant diverse connectivity, both between exchanges and to key data centres and traffic exchanges. This expansion brings Zayo’s coverage to 22 BT exchanges and 43 data centres as part of its 499 building footprint in London. London is one of 297 markets served globally by Zayo’s fibre network.

Qtel rebrands as Ooredoo in Qatar
Muscat, 17 March 2013 – Ooredoo, the group of companies formerly known as the Qtel Group, and the majority shareholder in Nawras, recently unveiled the new brand at a spectacular multimedia and theatrical event in Doha. Qatar Telecom (Qtel) became the first company in the group to unite under the new ‘Ooredoo’ identity in a move that will bring a new dimension to communications for the entire group of companies.
Ross Cormack, Nawras CEO, said, “This is an exciting transition that marks the next step in the evolution of our major shareholder and strengthens our position as part of this global brand. The new identity highlights the customer centric values on which the group was founded. Customers in Oman will benefit from the unity of Ooredoo as all operators in the Group share a common goal to enrich the lives of people in the countries where they operate. Nawras is proud to be a part of Ooredoo.”
Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al Thani, Ooredoo Chairman, said, “We have always put our customers at the heart of our business, and this new name shows that we want to be closer to our customers and engage with them in everything that we do. We are proud that Qatar, where the business was born, is the first country in Ooredoo’s international network to integrate with the new global brand. We are not simply about making connections, we are about enriching and empowering the people of Qatar and helping them achieve their goals.”
More than 2,000 people including government ministers, ambassadors, media professionals and customers of the company attended the event, which was broadcast live on Qatar TV. The celebration also featured a specially-branded film and theatrical performances. Concluding the ceremony, a large group of children holding red balloons entered the amphitheatre, treating the audience to an amazing ballet performance.

DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS & LIBERTY GLOBAL CLOSE DEAL TO ACQUIRE ALL3MEDIA
All3Media to remain an independently managed global TV production company
(London) – Discovery Communications and Liberty Global today finalized their transaction following regulatory clearance to jointly acquire All3Media, a leading global content creator and major distributor of award-winning TV programming. In May 2014, Discovery Communications and Liberty Global formed a joint venture to preserve All3Media’s creative autonomy while providing strategic guidance and investment to support its global growth.
“All3Media is a production powerhouse, with a unique ability to attract, foster and retain some of the best creative minds in the business. For nearly 30 years, Discovery has invested in high quality content and today’s deal furthers that commitment,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications. “Discovery has a proven track record of nurturing creativity and building scale across the world. Working with our valued partner Liberty Global, we will focus on empowering All3Media to continue innovating and delivering even greater stand-out content to its clients and partners across the globe.”
Mike Fries, CEO of Liberty Global, said, “We are excited to be closing the acquisition of All3Media. The business, which produces content for some of our biggest markets in Europe, including the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, is a natural fit for us and our strategy for content. Discovery is the perfect partner too, as they not only commission All3Media content already, but also share our ambition to create compelling, localized content for domestic markets. Together, we will seek to preserve All3Media’s creative independence and support its management to further grow this strong creative business.”
All3Media group consists of 19 production companies across Europe and the U.S., and was previously owned by its founders and the Permira funds. Discovery Communications and Liberty Global have committed to All3Media's creative autonomy and continued focus on serving its diversified customer base globally. Preserving its federal operating model, All3Media will continue to operate as it does today, with an independent executive management team.
Farah Ramzan Golant, CEO of All3Media, has decided to step down, having completed her role in securing the successful sale of the company to two long-term strategic global shareholders, positioning All3Media for its next stage of growth. A global search for a new CEO will begin immediately. Jane Turton, current COO, has been promoted to Managing Director of All3Media and will oversee the transition period. Neil Bright will continue in his role as CFO.
“Having successfully completed the sale of All3Media to Discovery Communications and Liberty Global, I have determined that this is the right time to leave the company to pursue a new challenge,” said Golant. “I was appointed as CEO to set the business on a new course for growth and to achieve a successful sale to strategic owners. Once accomplished, I agreed to remain as CEO through the transition of ownership to completion. In my tenure at All3Media, it has been a pleasure to work with the talented people across the group who are making ground-breaking content that finds strong audiences around the world. I know that All3Media is poised for a new period of great creative achievement, and I wish them every success.
Steve Morrison, Chairman and co-founder of All3Media, said, “Alongside Discovery and Liberty Global, I would like to express thanks to the All3Media founders, the management team and Permira for stewarding the business to the successful completion of this transaction. I would also like to thank Farah for her energetic leadership and wish her well in her next endeavour. Congratulations to every member of the All3 staff for helping to build such a fantastic, creative and commercial business. I am extremely proud of the work we’ve done together and confident we are leaving All3Media in incredibly capable hands.”
Co-founders of All3Media Steve Morrison, Jules Burns and David Liddiment are retiring from All3Media’s Board of Directors. Steve Morrison will serve as a special advisor to the joint venture’s Board of Directors, which will have equal representation from Discovery Communications and Liberty Global.
In May, All3Media was recapitalized with a structure that provides for a solid financial foundation as the joint venture takes control and All3Media enters the next phase of growth. J.P. Morgan acted as financial adviser to Discovery Communications and Liberty Global. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP served as lead transaction counsel and Ashursts acted as lead regulatory counsel. In addition, DLA Piper LLP served as legal adviser to Discovery Communications. Centerview Partners acted as financial adviser to All3Media and Clifford Chance served as legal adviser. Shearman & Sterling served as legal adviser to the management team of All3Media.

In a significant move, Viatel engineers have built infrastructure to close the network loop from Milan to Marseille. This new piece of network enables Viatel to provide diverse as well as protected wavelength services with speeds of up to 100G out of Milan and Marseille. From a geographical perspective, Marseille is strategically important for communications into and out of Europe from Africa, the Far East and Asia. The new infrastructure will enable Viatel customers to choose from a protected range of routes to all strategic cities across the Viatel footprint including Dublin, London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

In 1948 the Treaty of Brussels was signed between Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. It was further revisited in 1954 at the Paris Conference, when the Western European Union was established. It was declared defunct in 2011, after the Treaty of Lisbon, and the Treaty of Brussels was terminated. Cables
Yellow/AC-2
Yellow / AC-2 (Atlantic Crossing 2) is a submarine telecommunications cable system linking the USA and the UK. The different owners give this cable system different names, so it is known as both Yellow and AC-2. It has a capacity of 320 Gbit/s as of January 2007, upgradeable to 640 Gbit/s.
It has landing points in:
1.Bellport/Brookhaven, New York, USA
2.Bude, UK

Apollo
Apollo is an optical submarine communications cable system crossing the Atlantic Ocean, owned by Apollo Submarine Cable System Ltd (a joint venture between Cable & Wireless Worldwide and Alcatel).[1] It consists of 2 segments North and South, creating two fully diverse transatlantic paths.
In early 2006, Level 3 Communications announced its purchase of 300 Gbit/s of capacity between Apollo North and Apollo South with an option to purchase up 300 Gbit/s of future capacity. This acquisition gives Level 3 a transatlantic path that does not pass through either London or New York City, which is desirable to carriers due to network diversity concerns. This purchase represents the single largest transaction of sub-sea capacity in history without laying new cable.

In May 2011, Shaw announced its intent to spend $100 million, to convert its analog tiered cable service to digital over a 16 month period starting August 2011.
As part of the benefits package for the acquisition, Shaw will fund improvements to Canadian broadcasting, among them as follows:
Convert 67 analog over-the-air television transmitters in non-mandatory markets to digital by 2016.
Shaw has been slowly expanding its television offerings over the last few years, with most of the increases occurring in the HDTV part of the dial.
There are full-HD channels that have not yet been picked up by Shaw. Shaw usually picks up channels in HD format that have 60% or more of their programming in HD giving customers more High Definition Content.
.....the focus expressed in HDTV amy also be a tell
Customer service complaints are frequent among Canadian cable, mobile and Internet users, and Shaw ranked second-last for customer satisfaction among five cable TV providers in Western Canada in a 2013 survey by J.D. Power and Associates. It ranked last for Internet providers.[17]

Shaw Communications Expands in U.S. With $1.2B ViaWest Deal
NEW YORK (The Dea) -- Canadian media group Shaw Communications (SJR - Get Report)SJR is expanding into the U.S. data center market with the $1.2 billion purchase of private equity-backed ViaWest Inc.
Chief executive Brad Shaw told investors during a Thursday conference call that following the purchase, Shaw would be "immediately positioned at the forefront" of the market for outsourced cloud computing and outsourced server management among mid-market companies.
The deal provides a benchmark for privately held data centers, following the sale of Peak 10 Inc. to GI Partners LP earlier this year.
Shaw is paying Oak Hill Capital Partners 13 times annualized Ebitda for ViaWest, which operates 27 data centers in Denver, Dallas, Austin, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Portland, Minneapolis and Phoenix. The price includes $830 million in cash and $370 million in assumed debt.
ViaWest co-founder and CEO Nancy Phillips said that the data center market is "very fragmented." The company might look to expand in the Eastern US within the next 18 months.

BBC Canada is a Canadian English language Category B[clarification needed] cable and satellite specialty channel that is owned by Jasper Broadcasting Inc., a joint venture between Shaw Media (which serves as managing partner, and owns a controlling 80% interest) and BBC Worldwide (which owns the remaining 20%). My Big picture thoughts; DUTV product software: Algorithmin(s) > Data packets,(DPI) > Mins
The software is free if mins are routed through DUTV Group. DK but maybe something like .00001/min
If the software helps as much w/monetization as Big Data needs; then I think others will be coming onboard, (and slow to change when companies see improvements to their bottom line vs cost involved).
DK, I'm not a tech guy; just a kicker
