3) CBS 60 Minutes interviewed with CBS Chairman Constantine Karayannopoulos on March 22, 2015

From smartphones to electric and hybrid cars and defense missiles, modern U.S. life depends on rare earth elements but China dominates the industry

4) where can we use Rare Earth Elements:

Every Electric and hybrid-electric vehicle has a large battery. Each battery is made using several pounds of rare earth compounds. The use of electric vehicles is expected to increase rapidly, driven by energy independence, climate change and other concerns. This will increase the demand for rare earth materials.
For Example: Every TOYOTA PRIUS uses 25 Pounds Rear Earths .

The Prius family reached global cumulative sales of 4.8 million units by September 2014 , representing 67.7% of the 7 million hybrids sold worldwide by Toyota Motor Company since 1997

B) Battery Technologies: Secondary (rechargeable) batteries account for roughly 60% of the battery market, and portable rechargeable batteries account for slightly more than a third of the secondary battery market. Portable rechargeable batteries fill needs in:
Cellular phones, Computers, PDA, Camcorders, Digital Cameras, MP3 Players, HEV/PHEV/EV Others (energy storage, medical, UPS, backup systems
)

C) Communications: All smart phones , and most micro devices:

D) Large wind turbines require 2 TONS of rare earth magnets

.
Rare earth magnets are used in wind turbines. Some large turbines require two TONS of rare earth magnets. These magnets are very strong and make the turbines highly efficient. Rare earth magnets are used in turbines and generators in many alternative energy applications.

http://geology.com/articles/rare-earth-elements/

A 3 megawatt turbine uses roughly 1 metric ton of rare earths.

E) Energy Efficient Lighting:
Rare earth phosphors are applied to the insides of the bulbs and generate light when energy is applied. These compact fluorescent lamps (CFL’s) are replacing the standard incandescent light bulbs at a rapid rate.

F) Defense Technologies: Gas turbine engines in aircrafts, Fighter Jets, ALL GUIDED MISSILES
Rare Earths are critical to many defense related applications including the following:
Precision Guided Munitions which include both missiles and “smart” bombs – Rare Earths provide directional capabilities
Lasers – Used in rangefinders, target designators, and target interrogators
Detection devices for underwater mines
Communications
Aircraft – Used in a variety of aircraft control mechanisms as well as in high-temperature resistant ceramic coatings used in jet engines
Displays –Most defense system components contain one or more display devices associated with control panels to display and quickly communicate data
Radar Systems
Coatings
Optical Equipment
Sonar – Rare Earth alloy is replacing piezoceramic materials in several devices
Electronic Counter Measures

http://www.molycorp.com/products/rare-earths-...hnologies/

For Example:
The new F-35 fighter jets contain nearly half a ton of rare earths.

G) Health Care :
Imaging techniques such as CAT scans, MRIs, PET imaging devices, digital X-rays and lasers take advantage of the elements’ optical properties.
The biggest medical use for rare earths is in medicine’s biggest magnet–the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. MRI machines need over 1500 pounds of magnets each.

H) Industrial Technologies: G
LASS AND CERAMIC APPLICATIONS
motors for electric power steering,
magnetic refrigeration,
energy efficient appliance motors,

j) High-Technology Applications:
computers, laptops, smart phones and other mobile devices, digital music players, hard disk and optical drives used for data storage, “ear bud” speakers and microphones, fiber optics, lasers, optical temperature sensors, and many other applications; and

i) PRODUCT FOR CLEANING WATER: While it is becoming increasingly well known that rare earth materials are essential in a wide variety of advanced technologies, it is far less well known that rare earths now play an important role in water purification. We currently sell our cerium chloride water purification products in a liquid form for municipal and industrial wastewater applications (SorbX®) and pool & spa treatment (PhosFix®). We are also developing a solid form of cerium for use in consumer products like home water filtration pitchers and filters for camping and backpacking.

5) MCP's production increases

2014 Production 13,019 Metric Tons.

Average Sales Price of $36.53 per kilogram in 2014

2013 Production 12,873 Metric Tons.

Average Sales Price of $43.07 per kilogram in 2013
