U.S. Concrete's San Francisco Bay Area Business Unit, Central Concrete, Earns Two SCA 2014 Project-of-the-Year Awards

EULESS, TX --(Marketwired - April 16, 2015) - Central Concrete Supply Co., Inc., a business unit of U.S. Concrete, Inc. ( NASDAQ : USCR ), earned two Slag Cement Association (SCA) Project-of-the-Year Awards during the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Spring 2015 Convention in Kansas City, MO.

These awards were for (i) the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center Patient Care Pavilion, Summit Campus Project, in Oakland, California and (ii) the innovative green design of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, Eastern Span.

Green Design Winner: Alta Bates Summit Medical Center Patient Care Pavilion, Utilized Low-CO 2 Concrete; 100% of Demolition Concrete Recycled Alta Bates Summit Medical Center's Oakland's Patient Care Pavilion is a state-of-the-art hospital that has 230,000 square feet of space and 243 medical and surgical beds. The project called for a LEED Silver designation, which the owner applied for using a combination of low-CO 2 concrete and other recycled building products. Of the 19,000 cubic yards of concrete used, 80% of it was made with a mix that contained 50% or more cement replacement materials. To further reduce the carbon footprint , 85% of all demolition materials, including 100% of the demolished asphalt and concrete, were recycled and used on the project. The project exceeds California Title 24 Energy Standards by 16%.

High Performance Winner: San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge - Eastern Span: Specialty Concrete Mixes lead to many new performance milestones The first ever, single-tower, self-anchoring suspension bridge project spans Oakland on the east with Yerba Buena Island in the center of San Francisco Bay. The 150-year design life bridge project took 13 years from design to completion in 2014 and was valued over $6.4 billion. Central Concrete Supply Co., Inc. has supplied over a quarter of a million cubic yards of concrete -- equivalent to covering a football field with concrete, 153 feet thick. At peak times, Central Concrete utilized four plants, 60 trucks at a time (using 136 trucks for the East Span Deck pour alone), and multiple 12- to 16-hour pours, including several overnight placements. The Bay Bridge project entailed a number of rigorous requirements such as concrete durability, CO 2 reduction, strength and pumpability. To meet these requirements, Central Concrete engineered more than 40 specialty mixes, leading to many new performance milestones. Not only were the mixes optimized to deliver the aggressive performance specified for this large-scale, technically challenging project, but Central Concrete's use of 25% to 50% cement replacement materials significantly reduced the Bay Bridge's carbon footprint. The low-CO 2 mix designs resulted in at least 60 million pounds of CO 2 reduction, as compared to traditional Portland cement concrete.
