Here is a nice link for that information. Due to the high risk of shorting a stock and being new to stocks as you said, I'd say maybe PUT OPTIONS would be a better place to start as the risk is usually more forgiving.
just search "what is options trading" on Google and click the investopedia link.
Never be afraid to ask questions. But just like any stock do your diligent research on trading itself before placing money in blind, that's like asking a homeless guy to hold your wallet while you shop.
I'm unsure what trading platform you use, but TDAMERITRADE has paper trading (fake money) on its ThinkOrSwim platform. I'm sure your brokerage had something similar just ask them. Losing fake money is always better than real. Only suggestion is to paper trade with the same discipline as real money.
Also, read plenty of books. I will send you the names of really good books to learn with as soon as I hey a chance.
