Infonetics: Telcos and Cablecos Ramp Spending on Premium Broadband CPE in Race to Gigabit

CAMPBELL, CA --(Marketwired - April 10, 2015) - Technology market research firm Infonetics Research , now part of IHS Inc. ( NYSE : IHS ), today reported that growth in FTTH and DOCSIS 3.0 customer premises equipment (CPE) drove the global broadband CPE market to $10.5 billion in 2014, a 9 percent increase from the prior year.

Infonetics' fourth quarter 2014 (4Q14) and year-end PON, FTTH, Cable, DSL, and Wireless Broadband CPE report tracks DSL, cable, FTTH, and fixed LTE CPE; mobile broadband routers; residential gateways; and broadband subscribers.

"The race to deliver Gigabit services is on, particularly in North America and Western Europe, mature broadband markets where subscriber growth is steady yet competitive pressure remains high. Service providers are making significant investments in new technologies that provide a marketing advantage in terms of speeds offered over competitors. The net result is continued growth in DOCSIS 3.0 and upcoming 3.1 devices for cable operators, and FTTH, VDSL and upcoming G.fast CPE for telcos," said Jeff Heynen , research director for broadband access and pay TV at Infonetics Research , now part of IHS .

MORE BROADBAND MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

  • Worldwide broadband CPE revenue was $2.7 billion in 4Q14, flat from 3Q14
  • The two biggest product category winners in the broadband CPE market in 2014 were FTTH CPE (revenue up 18 percent) and DOCSIS 3.0 CPE (up 3 percent)
  • Regional pockets of growth in 2014 included GPON and DOCSIS 3.0 in North America; GPON in China, Europe, and Latin America; and VDSL in Europe
  • By 2019, DSL will make up a smaller share of broadband CPE revenue as telcos add more FTTH services, and many operators are expected to forgo FTTH altogether and instead use LTE spectrum to deliver fixed LTE services
