Qatar Challenges Global Youth to Help United Nations Fight Crime
  • Doha Youth Forum attracts more than 120 participants from 35 countries
  • Recommendations up for consideration in 13 th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

DOHA, Qatar, April 8, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The State of Qatar took an unprecedented step to involve the youth in the global fight against crime by hosting the First Doha Youth Forum on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice from 7 to 9 April 2015.

"Qatar believes that the rule of law is an important element in development and sustainability, and it's the desired path to build the world we want," said HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar's Permanent UN Representative. "This cannot be achieved without the youth's participation in the decision making process."

Qatar Minister of Youth and Sports, HE Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali, said: "This Forum is the first of its kind in the history of international conferences in general, and conferences on crime prevention and criminal justice in particular. It's a purely Qatari initiative, through which Qatar contributes to international dialogue about issues and challenges facing humanity."

The Youth Forum was organised by The State of Qatar, Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

It precedes the 13 th edition of the United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Qatar from April 12 to 19. The UN Congress has been held every 5 years since 1955.

With 120 student delegates aged 16 to 26, from 35 countries, the Forum presents a key opportunity for the youth to work together and develop creative solutions to global crime issues.

"The best tool to combat crime is education," said Keynote Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand,. "I congratulate Qatar and the Forum organizers for promoting education to involve the youth in the planning and development of national crime prevention strategies."

The student delegates will discuss the three main themes that the UN Congress will focus on:

  • The successes and challenges in the implementation of comprehensive policies and strategies for the prevention of crime to strengthen the rule of law in support of sustainable development
  • National approaches to public participation in the strengthening of crime prevention and criminal justice
  • Enhancing the prevention of new forms of crimes such as cybercrime and trafficking in cultural property.

The insights from the Forum will be presented for consideration at the UN Congress.

"Qatar should be commended for making the Forum a point for start, and not a point of arrival," said Mr. Dimitri Vlassis, Head of Corruption Prevention and Economic Crimes, UNODC.
