Campus life just got easier for the 21 million students throughout the United States currently enrolled in colleges and universities. Net Element, Inc. (NASDAQ: NETE), through a newly announced strategic partnership with TAS Group, is preparing to begin promotional campaigns for TAS Campus, a Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) chip-enabled prepaid solution to campus-related expenses. Through the agreement, Net Element expects to open the door for a powerful multi-application payment solution for both students and faculty.
“The TAS platform opens new and exciting possibilities that will make payment acceptance systems more user-friendly,” stated Oleg Firer, Chief Executive Officer of Net Element. “On college campuses for example, students can be issued a multipurpose card that does it all: payments, identification, RFID and controlled access – with additional capabilities for mobile wallet and wearable devices.”
An EMV-enabled solution could have a revolutionary impact on university living expenses. Today, most universities turn to meal plans as a way to allocate money for food, particularly for freshman and new students. According to the Money for College Project, these plans cost students an average of $1,600 per semester, which works out to approximately $10 for each meal. In addition to the high cost, these systems are often severely limited by their usability. Whereas campus cards may be accepted at one or two off-campus locations, a switch to an EMV-enabled solution would open the door for acceptance at nearly any restaurant or store, providing students with the potential for substantial savings throughout their expensive studies.
In addition to the added convenience factor, there is serious upside to consider when combining a payment solution with an identification card. According to Scambusters, college students are primary targets for identity theft, because their credit reports are normally blank slates with relatively easy access to new accounts. By harnessing a single multipurpose card for identification and payments, students would immediately gain an extra level of protection in the event of a dishonest roommate or misplaced wallet.
There’s little doubt that TAS Campus could make major waves in the current payment ecosystem of the country’s colleges and universities. As Net Element continues to grow in vital markets around the world, strategic partnerships such as this could provide the opportunity for significant returns for shareholders in the months to come.
