Perhaps they turned the lights away from the aircraft in order to keep from having to turn them off, so that they could turn them back around right after the drill for lighting the aircraft area for safety reasons - remember that many of those types of outdoor area lights take a while to come back on after being turned off, especially in cold weather due to their use of ballasts.
