Credit Card Voice Activation Coming Soon Thanks To Smart Wallet Maker

Smart credit cards that you control through voice commands may soon be a thing thanks to Wocket smart wallet maker, NXT-ID. The biometric authentication company announced this week that it has filed a patent for a system for using voice commands to select and verify payments. The voice activation would make it easier to pull up one of up to 10,000 cards that might be stored on the company’s own Wocket smart wallet but it also provides an additional layer of security.

"We are very excited to offer this new convenient and secure method to make payments", David Tunnell, Chief Technology Officer of NXT-ID, said in the release. "We've all been there - Waiting in line as we fumble through our wallets to find the right card or information. With this invention, we not only secure your data by recognizing you are who you say you are from your voice, but we also provide an extremely convenient way for you to select how you wish to pay."

The Wocket smart wallet can store digital version of up to 10,000 of your cards. You can swipe all your stripe cards like credit cards into the Wocket, scan in barcode cards or manually enter textual information. So instead of carrying all these physical cards, your smart wallet houses a digital version of the cards that can be accessed via the Wocket’s touchscreen. When it comes to paying, you can tap the wallet on POS systems that support NFC technology or you can load the card information onto the accompanying Wocket card to physically swipe a card. Therefore, Wocket smart wallet system will work anywhere credit cards or mobile tap to pay are accepted.

With the new voice activation system, instead of pulling up the card you want through the touchscreen, you can just say the card you want out loud. Fortunately, you can name your cards so instead of shouting Mastercard account ending in 1234, so you can say Ice cream sundae account or grocery card instead of Black Amex Card. Unlike other smart cards or wallets, the Wocket can work on its own without an accompanying app or Internet connection. But there are also accompanying smartphone and desktop apps, so voice control and verification can also work across different devices.

"Convenience to access your private data is just as important as securing your private data", Tunnell added. "To make it even more convenient, the voice may be recognized and emulated on the same device, such as a cell phone or our Wocket smart wallet, or recognized on one device and directed to another device such as a watch or a reprogrammable smart card like our WocketCard to then make the payment. In addition, the ability to name your account further protects your information since no one knows which card you are choosing. For instance, no private information is revealed if you say "grocery card" or "gas card number 3". You know the account you are choosing, but no one else does."

The Wocket smart wallet was previously accepting pre orders priced at $150 but potential buyers now have to request an invite to purchase. The product is similar to Coin, which stores up to 8 cards on the smart card itself and unlimited cards on the Coin mobile app. Coin is only available for preorder now for $100 with shipping scheduled for this summer. But both Coin and Wocket should get a move on before mobile payment apps like Apple Pay and Google Pay make their products obsolete.
