Medical Device Makers Are Cheering After Latest Victory from GOP
ACCESSWIRE - Fri Nov 14, 10:15AM CST
CORAL GABLES, FL / ACCESSWIRE / November 14, 2014 / For Democrats, the "wounds" are still fresh. A new GOP senate now rules "the Hill" and amidst the fog of uncertainty for some key decisions has arisen one clear standout, which is Obamacare (The Affordable Care Act); more specifically the tax it placed on medical devices. See, the Affordable Care Act imposes a 2.3% excise tax on the sale of medical devices, which in most cases is one of the highest effective tax rates of nearly any industry in the world...and go figure, the US is the only country to impose such a tax on medical devices. In the end, it seems like it has come down to jobs or specifically the ones that have been lost because of the tax. In fact according to the Advanced Medical Technology Association, the Medical Device Tax has cost the industry about 14,000 jobs and prevented the creation of nearly 20,000 more. Now the rise for repeal has begun to echo on Capitol Hill from both parties and in turn, the market has reacted.
