The proponents are motivated by the belief that there are billions of naked-shorted "air shares", and various invisible "colluders" will one day be forced to cover their nonexistent positions, thus causing an unprecedented spike in share price, making all the "down averagers" wealthy beyond their wildest dreams.
Never mind that such a forced-covering of nonexistent "air shares" by invisible colluders has never happened in the history of the universe (or doesn't make the least bit of sense). Never mind that the main promoters of this theory have been wrong 100% of the time over the last decade on the dozens of stocks they have previously promoted with this theory, and everyone who has followed their advice has lost everything 100% of the time.
Trying to discuss facts with anyone of that mindset is like walking into the schizophrenia wing of a psychiatric ward, and telling all the patients that the voices in their head aren't real, and there really is no conspiracy against them. Every patient would react by listening to the voices in their head telling them that such a person is really part of the conspiracy, whose only intention is to try to fool them.
