This is all best guess, but you should be able to call the company to verify.
He would have paid about half of what was then the share price & the shares would have been issued in the form of restricted certificates. After about a 6 month period the restriction would have been lifted, but he would have had to send the cert's in to the agent to have them reissued without the restriction, at which point he could have sent them in to a broker.
At this point he would either have the original cert's, the unrestricted cert's or, the shares on deposit someplace (unless of course he already sold them).
Back in 2009 I think the share price was anywhere from .02-.05.
He may have been sitting on anywhere from 12,000,000 - 30,000,000 shares which will all be worth A LOT more then he paid in the very near future.
