$HIMR Removing standing timbers from shallow reservoir waters also has other positive benefits- waterway navigation and fishing are enhanced by removing hazards and improving flow; circulation and water quality are improved by removing standing vegetation that would ultimately decompose and, in anaerobic depths, create greenhouse gases such as methane and, at upper levels, carbon dioxide. Removing tree canopies from a reservoir improves dam efficiency as potential debris is extracted before it can clog the water intake systems. Converting the resulting unusable biomass into energy, for example, adds additional power to the nation’s grid and reduces pressure on the existing hydroelectric dam, especially during times of drought.
