Not a crystal ball
but an Indy Car drops in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Dec. 22, 2014)– The New Year’s Eve party in downtown Indianapolis will showcase the city’s heritage with an IndyCar drop, instead of the traditional ball drop.

The car that will be suspended over Georgia Street was unveiled Monday morning at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. People got a chance to check out the car up close before the big bash.

This is the first time downtown Indy will host a New Year’s Eve party. Organizers said dropping an IndyCar at midnight will draw plenty of people downtown to appreciate the city’s history and the changing landscape.

“It’s iconic to Indianapolis,” said Sherry Seiwert, president of Downtown Indy. “It sets us apart from other cities. We’re celebrating such great activity going on in the downtown area. We have so many residents moving downtown. So this is going to be great, just to have everybody come down and celebrate.”

Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles said the New Year’s Eve party shows how well groups in Indy work together.

“All of us kind of live in that same entertainment space but we all try to support each other,” Boles said. “What we’re trying to do is support this wonderful city we live in. So, having events like this is really important.”

“We do need something like this,” said Seiwert. “Downtown has had so much transformation in last few decades. It’s just great that were adding fun events that everybody can participate in.”

On New Year’s Eve, the party will start at 5 p.m. with live bands performing outdoors, activities inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse and food trucks lining the street.

You can watch the Indy Car drop live on WTTV.
