Letters of the alphabet and typefaces cannot be protected individually unless augmented with additional unique design/graphical or artistic elements, e.g., the Safeway "S". MRIB could only attempt to protect "Marani". Same reason you see famous brand typefaces, but not the brand itself used with everything from album covers to novelty tee shirts, e.g., Coca-Cola, which is copied all the time just not using the brand name but the same typeface.
