I will be the first to agree with you there. All that matters is whether or not PTOI has a process which can convert some source of plastic somewhere into a fuel or oil worth more than the plastic.
It would be very worthwhile to press the company for answers as to whether or not they've been able to show they have such a value-adding process or whether they only "hope" to one day develop something commercially viable, the latter which flies in the face of everything investors have been told over the years. Ask via e-mail so you have a copy of what they say just in case.
On the other hand, you can recognize that both Mr. Bordynuik and Mr. Heddle have lied and misled investors on numerous occasions. Just because a lie is too big to be a lie and simultaneously too good to be true doesn't mean it's not really a lie.
Another way is to recognize that the hydrocarbon-only plastics which PTOI is allowed to use per the NYDEC are, pound for pound, roughly the same cost as even diesel. It's impossible to convert plastic to any fuel of a higher value--scrap plastic has a higher value to plastic recyclers than as any type of fuel.
