As 2014 comes to a close, research firms are sharing their top technology predictions for 2015 — many of which are tied to the ongoing growth and evolution of Internet-connected devices and technologies. Here are key technology projections for the coming year and beyond from IDC and Gartner:
New Technologies Will Drive Growth. According to IDC analysis, new technologies will propel 100 percent of growth. With this, worldwide IT and telecommunications spending will rise 3.8 percent in 2015, or $3.8 trillion. The vast majority of this spending growth will be attributed to emerging technologies, such as the cloud, big data analytics, the Internet of Things and mobile.
IoT Will Fuel Tech Expansion. IoT spending, compared to 2014, will increase by 14 percent in the coming year and exceed $1.7 trillion. Given the increasing focus on this area, IDC predicts IT vendors will create specific IoT solutions companies.
A Growing Cloud Ecosystem. Spending on the cloud ecosystem, including public, private, enabling IT and services, will rise from $118 billion to nearly $200 billion in 2018.
Cost-Saving Benefits for Businesses. By 2018, Gartner projects business operations costs will be cut by 30 percent as a result of efficiencies delivered by smart machines and industrialized services.
Shifting to Meet Consumer Needs. To maintain a competitive edge, Gartner also predicts that 70 percent of successful digital business models will depend on unstable processes that shift quickly and respond directly to consumer needs by 2017. In that same year, 50 percent of consumer product investments are expected to be dedicated to innovations that enhance the overall customer experience and help secure brand loyalty.
Technology Brings Life-Enhancing Benefits. Additionally, Gartner forecasts that the increasing adoption of wireless health monitoring technology will increase world life expectancy by an average of 0.5 years by 2020.
As IDC Chief Analyst Frank Gens observes, the industry is shifting into a new gear with an explosion of innovation: “Look for lots of vendor consolidation, ‘strange bedfellow' partnerships, death-match battles for developers (and their apps), expanding cognitive/machine learning and IoT offerings …”
