CARMEL, Ind. -

There have been coyote sightings all over Central Indiana, and the animals can pose a threat, especially if you have a pet in your home.

Coyotes are becoming a bigger concern in Carmel, and around Central Indiana, as neighborhoods are expanding into what used to be rural or wooded areas.

Eyewitness News has covered a number of those stories where family pets were attacked or homeowners sighted the animals in their yards.

Just last month in Lafayette, there were two fatal coyote attacks on dogs in a 24-hour period.

Earlier this year in Carmel and in recent years in Greenwood, we've heard the stories of coyotes sighted in areas people normally wouldn't expect them.

"Mostly nocturnal, get out an night, adaptable to any kind of food sources," said Warren Gartner with the Department of Natural Resources. "That's one of the things we talk to people about. If you don't want coyotes close by, clean up the things that will attract, like if you feed pets outside, don't leave food outside, bird feeders, not only birdseed but chipmunks and things drawn to bird feeders too."

DNR says coyotes are smaller animals, so if you have larger pets they will likely stay away. But, smaller pets may be prey .

There is a meeting from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cool Creek Nature Center in Hamilton County to talk about what homeowners should do, and to give information about coyotes.

It's free, but registration is required. You can contact the Cool Creek Nature Center at 317-774-2500 to sign up.
