I'm from the South. I know what it means. Indeed, sometimes the song does mean different things to different folk groups today. People trying to re-interpret a struggle against oppression (via uncle toms, patronizers, wanna-be's), continues to be just the problem. That knowledge is passed down, and treasured, as sometimes this poetry is all that a person has. Sorry, a C & P website ain't gonna do it.
