Re: slowfloat #715
Shabby and Slowfloat make very fine observations. We have no idea whether Ebola has "staying power". The system basically had it as a horror story because it was in remote locations in Africa, there was no real treatment provided, by the time anyone figured out what was going on it had worked its way through a local population that was isolated and so there was no real fear or strong effort to figure out how to avoid, care or cure. Right now there are ongoing intensified efforts. So maybe it will become "yesterday's disease" or maybe it will be a serious threat for a long time. We simply don't know.

But the fact that the N-Assay can do very rapid virus detection is huge because of the fact that so many things produce the same "flu-like" symptoms or even no early symptoms in communicable stages. Identifying and intervening with targeted treatments is critical. Plus, recognizing that something is a virus is important because antibiotics don't generally work on viruses so administering wide application antibiotics in such situations without really knowing what you are treating is expensive and counterproductive. Of course Big Pharma probably likes massive product use regardless of need or effectiveness.

Also, as noted, the awareness of the N-Assay is a critical byproduct of all this. The press coverage helps make a record and legitimates the product as well as brings this little company to peoples' attention. Great publicity that can transfer to other potential users.
