Bill Gates, the Microsoft mastermind and wealthiest man in the universe, may not be too quick to admit whether or not he has any experience as a stoner, but the billionaire software mogul and worldwide philanthropist has no trouble acknowledging that he voted for the legalization of marijuana.
During a recent BuzzFeed interview, Gates says that while he voted “yes” to pass Initiative 502, legalizing marijuana for recreational use in Washington State, he was somewhat surprised that it actually received approval. Now, he’s anxious to see what effects their efforts will have on the community.
“It’s an experiment, and it’s probably good to have a couple states try it out to see before you make it national policy,” he says.
Gates, who is no stranger to policies on global public health and American education, says he’s impressed with how the new law is being applied. But he’s also clear on the fact that the state has the responsibility to answer the concerns of an entire nation: “Can they keep it out of minors’ hands? Will it reduce alcohol consumption? Are there some people who use it at levels you might think of as inappropriate? Will drug gangs make less money?”
In regards to illegal drug trafficking, Gates says he believes legalization will hurt the black market. Traffickers “are going to make a lot less money, and some of the perverse things about the illegal-drug trade will be avoided,” he hopes.
When asked if he had ever smoked pot, Gates simply refused to answer. Yet, in a 1994 interview with Playboy, Gates admits to dropping LSD. “There were things I did under the age of 25 that I ended up not doing subsequently,” Gates told Playboy. “That was on the other side of that boundary. The young mind can deal with certain kinds of gooping around that I don't think at this age I could. I don't think you're as capable of handling lack of sleep or whatever challenges you throw at your body as you get older. However, I never missed a day of work.”
