Bud Viz - Helping YOU Better Understand Telemedici
Post# of 5949
Funny as it may, most people fail to realize, but telemedicine was invented more than 40 years ago in the early 70's Jetson's cartoon.
Forward thinkers, such as Gene Roddenbury, brought us the modern day "cell phone," (the 1964 Star Trek episode "The Cage" the "Communicator" was introduced), So it is no stretch to see "The Jetson's" Telemedicine in use today in hospitals...
Here's an example of how telemedicine is in-use today in a hospital, whereby remote (on call) doctors treat patients.
What differs in BG's design is the patient is treated from home, using a portable, affordable handheld device and laptop:
"A telemedince program is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and is activated when a physician from a participating hospital calls a toll free telephone number. The UCDCH pediatric critical care physician is paged and a telemedicine consultation is typically initiated within 5 minutes. Each consultation is characterized by a live, interactive, two-way audiovisual dialogue between the UCDCH pediatric critical care physician, the remote hospital’s physician, bedside ICU nurse, ICU respiratory therapist, and (when possible) the patient’s parent/guardian.. The UCDCH physician is able to review the child’s history, vital signs, laboratory results, radiographs, monitoring, and therapeutic devices (e.g., ventilator, invasive pressure monitoring), and perform a physical exam."
