Because companies trading on exchanges in Canada must adhere to strict guidelines in terms of news, dissemination of news, filing audited annual reports and un-audited financials every three months, therefore the type of pronouncement allowed for companies trading on OTC pinks for example, are not scrutinised to the same degree as they would be if trading on the Canadian public exchanges. Because of this volumes can be low on companies with small outstanding floats as the volatility surrounding them is not as great as it might be for a company trading on the OTC pinks. If you look at the sheer number of press releases issued by some OTC companies, particularly on the greys, and compare them to press releases issued by smaller companies trading in Canada, there is no comparision. One Canadian company announced its intention to broaden its horizons from mining into medical marijuana. It was halted for a month because of that. You also must remember that three stocks on the Nasdaq will trade more in a day than all issues on the TSX would. Those low float companies tend to be closely held so that the daily volumes are low.
