Fans invited to name new tiger cub
Indianapolis Zoo

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 12, 2014) – The Indianapolis Zoo is inviting fans to help name their new tiger cub!

The zoo set up a poll on their Facebook page where the public can vote on a name for a female Amur tiger cub.

Zookeepers have preselected three names for fans to vote on: Chudo (pronounced CHEW-da), meaning “miracle”; Shoomka (pronounced SHUM-ka), meaning “noisy”; and Zoya (pronounced ZOY-a), meaning “life”.

The poll will be open for two weeks, from today, Sept. 12, through Friday, Sept. 26.

The chosen name will be announced later this month along with additional details on when Zoo guests can view the cub for the first time.

Facebook users who like the Indianapolis Zoo’s page can vote once per day.

Additionally, one lucky fan will be chosen at random to receive an Indianapolis Zoo prize pack, including a tiger plush and a family four-pack of Zoo tickets.

The Zoo welcomed the baby tiger on July 10th.

The female cub is the first for 6-year-old tiger Andrea.

Zoo veterinarians and keepers are pleased with the cub’s progress.

At her two-month checkup on Wednesday, she weighed 18.3 pounds, nearly three times larger than the 6.2 pounds recorded during her first weigh-in on July 26.

Keepers also note the cub is very active and playful toward Andrea.

She is already eating meat and has even been observed doing some stalking behaviors.

The new addition brings the number of Amur tigers at the Zoo to four, also including 7-year-old male Petya, the cub’s first-time father.
