Finisar Introduces 4 x 16 Port WaveShaper Programmable Optical Processor to Enable Optical Networking Research Applications

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 9, 2014) - Finisar Corporation ( NASDAQ : FNSR ) today announced the upgrade of the WaveShaper 16000 to a 4x16 port structure. Designed for R&D applications in advanced optical networking, the enhanced WaveShaper 16000 allows switching and filtering of optical signals with arbitrary amplitude and phase between any input and output port combination.

Covering the entire C-band of the optical communications window, the WaveShaper 16000 also supports Fourier Processing which allows splitting of an input optical signal between multiple output ports, each with individual filter functions applied. The WaveShaper 16000 can be controlled using Finisar's intuitive WaveManager graphical user interface. Alternatively, Finisar's simple Application Programming Interface, which is available for both Windows and Linux operating systems, allows integration of the WaveShaper in automated research and test environments.

"The 4x16 port WaveShaper will greatly support research and development in the areas of elastic and space division multiplexed optical networks as well as software defined optical networking," said Dr. George Zervas, Lecturer in the High Performance Networks (HPN) Group at the University of Bristol. "Finisar's unique technology will enable a step change in ROADM design. It will enhance optical programmability, flexibility and scalability to address the key challenges of the future internet." The HPN group at the University of Bristol is evaluating the 4x16 technology on transformative programmable architectures and test beds.

The WaveShaper 16000 with 4x16 port configuration is available as bench-top unit (16000S) and as a modular version for system integration (16000M). It has the same size and command set as the existing members of the WaveShaper family and therefore can serve as a drop-in replacement for existing configurations. The WaveShaper 16000 is available and can be ordered immediately.

Finisar's test instrument family, including the WaveShaper 16000S, will be on display at ECOC 2014 from September 22-24 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, at Finisar's booth #412.
