Ultra HD and HEVC are two of the subjects that dominated the International CES 2014 news announcements from the broadcast/Pay TV industry vendors. Here is a round-up of the stories.
UltraHD/4K
Harmonic was powering multiple end-to-end transmission demonstrations of 4K Ultra HD. The company was showcasing the picture quality of the new format on Ultra HD TVs and set-top boxes with silicon partners Broadcom Corporation and Sigma Designs, and CE giant Samsung Electronics.
The company’s ProMedia Xpress product is undergoing interoperability testing with 4K 60-Hz Samsung UHD TVs and this could be seen in the Samsung exhibit area.
There were two broadcast workflow demonstrations using the Harmonic ProMedia Xpress transcoding software. One was described as the first standards-compliant live 4K Ultra HD 30-Hz broadcast workflow, with decoding by Broadcom’s latest BCM7445-based STB. The second was said to be the first 4K Ultra HD 120-Hz broadcast workflow. The transcoded UHD 24/30/60 fps content was being played back on Sigma Designs’ 120-Hz Ultra HD Platform.
Envivio 4K HEVC compression was being demonstrated by industry silicon partners Broadcom, MStar Semiconductor and STMicroelectronics. These leading providers of chipsets and semiconductors for consumer devices, including television sets and set-top boxes, featured content encoded by Envivio in 4K (Ultra HD) format, using the latest generation HEVC (H.265) video codec. Broadcom and Envivio are working together on 4K HEVC trials with several Tier 1 video service providers as part of Envivio’s HEVC Early Access Programme.
Compression specialist ATEME announced that it has expanded its cooperation with manufacturers of UltraHD televisions and 4K capable set-top-boxes to guarantee flawless interoperability using the new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard ahead of the first deployments scheduled for 2014. ATEME is working with the leading manufacturers of UHDTV sets, systems-on-chip (SoC) and set-top-boxes to ensure the interoperability of its TITAN encoder with their most advanced decoding solutions for UHDTV and HEVC. Various sets including those presented by LG Electronics at CES are fully compatible with the TITAN encoder. TITAN has also been successfully tested with Broadcom’s flagship Ultra HD video decoder SoC, the BCM7445, and set-top-boxes based on this SoC.
Elemental Technologies is powering 4K video processing in HEVC/H.265 and MPEG-DASH formats for leading CE device and semiconductor manufacturers at the Las Vegas show. M-GO, a pay-as-you-go digital movie and TV streaming service, which is a joint venture betweenTechnicolor and DreamWorks Animation, announced that it has developed a comprehensive 4K streaming service to launch on Samsung UHD TVs in the spring. M-GO will kick off with a wide selection of full-length 4K theatrical hits and popular TV shows from Hollywood’s leading studios and networks to be made available to consumers once they are released digitally.
NAGRA is demonstrating its Gravity Ultra UI experience for 4K TV, which was shown to visitors at IBC in September. This is designed to give the User Interface the make-over it needs to look great on huge UHD screens, including making use of the extra glass real-estate. Gravity Ultra uses HTML5, or as NAGRA likes to put it, pushes HTML5 to its limits. It blends live TV, VOD, music, social TV applications and more with companion device control and navigation, as well as speech and voice search recognition.

Another leading SoC vendor, Sigma Designs, launched its new HEVC capable SMP8750 family at the show, promising multiple cost and performance combinations to suit STB platforms ranging from zapper boxes to PVRs and covering hybrid boxes and IPTV set-tops. The SMP8756 SoC will combine the HEVC compression standard with a high performance ARM Cortex A9 CPU and an ARM Mali 400 GPU and, according to its maker, will offer a unique combination of performance, user experience and video quality. The SMP8750 series SoCs support HEVC’s Main-10 profile, allowing processing of up to 10 bit color samples.
Thomson Video Networks and MStar Semiconductor have been demonstrating delivery of HEVC OTT content to connected TVs. The demonstration is designed to highlight the interoperability of Thomson Video Networks’ ViBE VS7000 multi-screen encoding/transcoding platform with MStar’s 4K system-on-a-chip, which provides native HEVC decoding in next-generation connected television sets.
It is turning into a good show for Rovi’s DivX HEVC solution. Brightcove has licensed the technology and plans to support the codec within its Zencoder cloud-based encoding service, enabling publishers to take advantage of the new compression efficiencies for UHD and other 4K experiences across different devices.
Rovi and Sharp Corporation have agreed to renew a multi-year DivX licensing agreement. The new agreement enables Sharp to integrate DivX HEVC technology in its next-generation AQUOS TVs and AQUOS Blu-ray disc recorder product lines to support the high-quality streaming and playback of DivX HEVC HD 720p/1080p and UltraHD/4K HEVC content. The agreement also includes use of Rovi’s adaptive streaming solution, DivX Plus Streaming.
MStar has also licensed Rovi’s DivX HEVC technology for integration into its SoCs for set-top boxes and digital TVs. As a major supplier to the world’s leading CE manufacturers, MStar can help drive industry adoption of DivX HEVC and enable popular devices to support entertainment downloads as well as high-quality streaming of HD 720p/1080p and UltraHD/4K HEVC content, the companies say.
There are a host of DivX demonstrations at the show. The newly unveiled DivX Live is one of the first formats compliant with MPEG-DASH and it incorporates support for HEVC to enable a new generation of TV Everywhere streaming services to mobile devices. There is a demonstration of an end-to-end solution that includes DivX Live adaptive HEVC encoding from Elemental Technologies, the encoding specialist. The live broadcast content is being streamed to an Android tablet at up to 720p resolution running the latest DivX player. The demo also features streams encoded by Wowza Media Systems, the provider of media server software.
A live encoding and decoding flow of streaming DivX HEVC UltraHD (4K) video to a set top box is also on display. The low power live Ultra HD HEVC encoder is running on the KALRAY MPPA MANYCORE processor and streamed to a Bouygues Telecom Bbox set-top box.
HEVC background – in case you are new to the subject
HEVC is the next generation of video compression, which will co-exist with the ubiquitous MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codecs but in theory could supersede them one day. Improvements over H.264 will range between 25% and 50% based on implementation, with later generations of the codec achieving higher efficiencies.
The specification has now been standardized so is also known as H.265. It is widely expected that HEVC will be deployed first into the OTT/streaming market including on connected TV devices before becoming part of mainstream traditional TV delivery. This is because new set-top boxes, containing new decode chips capable of processing HEVC, must penetrate consumer homes before platform operators can introduce commercial H.265 based TV services. Key benefits for the new codec will include: Better quality and more reliable pictures on streaming/OTT services and greater reach for OTT video (i.e. over lower bandwidth broadband networks); Better and more reliable mobile video; More HD channels on broadcast networks or greater reach for HD content on IPTV networks; The launch of commercial UltraHD broadcast TV services.
Because it uses offline encoding, on-demand content could appear in H.265 ahead of real-time encoded live and linear programming.

2014 LG TVs 4k streaming HEVC and HDMI 2.0
WebOS will be available in all mid-range and high-end 2014 TVs from LG. One of the first apps to launch for the system is Netflix. Netflix and LG have partnered to make the Netflix app on webOS TVs compatible with 4K streaming via HEVC, as all of LG’s Ultra HD TVs and will support HEVC and HDMI 2.0.
An interesting aspect here is that most of LG’s Full HD TVs will also support HEVC decoding in up to 2K at 60fps. Potentially this is very interesting if streaming services such as Netflix decide to encode Full HD content in HEVC, too.
Other notable apps include YouTube, Picasa, twitter, Hulu Plus, Redbox, CinemaNow, Amazon Instant, and Pandora. Besides Netflix, LG has not announced any 4K partnerships, which means that there is still very little native content to watch on one of their new Ultra HD TVs. Hopefully that will change in the near future.
