I have scoured the web and looked up on some good old fashioned books here and can not understand what an alternative to an IPO there is for shares that have not yet hit the open market or secondary market.

Are you able to shed light on this statement? What are alternatives, to the traditional IPO, for companies and shareholders holding registered shares that have not begun trading? I'm at a dead end.
